What Is a Drop 2 Voicing? Piano Guide

A drop 2 voicing is a mechanical transformation applied to a close-position chord. The recipe is simple: take the second note from the top and drop it down one octave. The result is a wider voicing with an open, airy quality that sounds completely different from the original close position.

Step by Step: Cmaj7

Start with Cmaj7 in close position — all four notes stacked tightly: C, E, G, B. Play it and notice how compact it sounds:

Now apply the drop 2 technique. The notes from top to bottom are B, G, E, C. The second from the top is G. Drop it down one octave — from G4 to G3. The resulting voicing is G, C, E, B:

Hear the difference? The close position sounds tight and clustered. The drop 2 sounds spacious and resonant. That gap between the low G and the rest of the voicing creates an openness that's perfect for slower, more lyrical passages.

Why Drop 2 Voicings Matter

Drop 2 voicings are the bread and butter of jazz guitar — the guitar's tuning makes them the most natural four-note voicings to play. But they're equally valuable on piano, especially in two contexts:

  • Right hand voicings: Play a drop 2 in your right hand while your left hand plays the root or a shell. The wide spread of the drop 2 gives you a full, orchestral sound.
  • Two-handed chord melody: When you're playing the melody and harmony simultaneously, drop 2 voicings keep the melody on top with enough space between the inner voices to sound clear.

Applying Drop 2 Across Inversions

You can apply the drop 2 technique to any inversion of a chord. Each inversion produces a different drop 2 voicing with a different note on top, giving you four variations per chord. This is a systematic way to generate voicings up and down the keyboard.

Start by applying drop 2 to the chord types you already know from your beginner studies — Cmaj7, Dm7, G7. Once you can drop 2 any close-position chord by reflex, you've added a powerful tool to your voicing vocabulary.
